Start with the harvest window
Fresh ginger sourcing starts with the harvest window. Confirm the origin region, the expected harvest month and the grade you need before negotiating price, because sizing and fibre content shift across the season.
Ask for a sample from the current season before the order is fixed. A sample shows how this year's crop is behaving far better than last year's photographs do.
- Origin region and harvest month of the lot you are buying
- Grade and size range matched to your market
- Sample taken from the current season
- Loading window aligned with your customs broker's schedule

Verify processing and grading
Washed and air-dried ginger travels better than unwashed roots, and consistent grading reduces rejection risk at the destination market. Ask suppliers to share sorting and inspection records before loading.
Grading agreed before the container is sealed is the cheapest form of quality control a buyer can put in place.
Line up documents before loading
Align documents with your customs broker early. The phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin and certificate of analysis should be issued before the container leaves the port, so clearance at the destination does not stall.
- Phytosanitary certificate issued by the plant quarantine authority
- Certificate of origin for duty treatment
- Certificate of analysis recording grade and moisture
- Export declaration filed with customs
